Interview: Mac from Pierrepont Hicks

1. Pierrepont Hicks, I’ve always been intrigued by the name. Can you explain that for us?

That one is classified. Sorry. ;)

2. In the past few years we have seen more traditional classic men’s styles making their way into popular culture. Why do think men are starting branch out and explore different styles and fashion accessories?

Menswear is definitely growing in a million different directions.  The guys who are embracing more traditional styles and brands are really just craving quality in my opinion.  Guys want to buy goods that will last from folks who are trustworthy of accepting their money for product. Done deal.

3. Bow ties, they are certainly a very ‘now’ accessory. Do you think that they will continue to be as popular in the next 3-5 years? It’s really great to see.

We’ve moving lots of bows – probably just as many as neckties and there is a huge bowtie culture out there of men we sell our goods to who never wear anything other than a bow.  People like professors, doctors, judges, architects, etc.… I don’t know that it will last for some of the people who wear it solely as a trend, but it is certainly nice to see people trying them out for the first time and then really embracing the look.

4. Innovation and creativity can be found at the heart of all great ventures. How do you make sure that your products are continually new and exciting

Our style is always evolving and we try to be a little unique. We never produce anything that I wouldn’t sport myself, so we aren’t really into a lot of the trends out there.  We have a lot of inspiration just from our life here in Minnesota, when we’re traveling or during our frequent visits to Brooklyn where we find ourselves constantly inspired.

5. Would you say that your business follows a structured process, with rules and set plans for new lines, or more of an organic one?

I like to think that I am a structured person, but Pierrepont Hicks is more spontaneous and organic. Nothing is ever forced and being parents (2YO daughter and another girl on the way) it is literally impossible to stick to plans or structured timelines.  We launched in October with a Fall line which is the opposite of the fashion industry “seasons”.  We don’t know that ties really have to be marketed the way designer’s collections are (i.e. Feb = Fall fashion shows).  In February, we’re going to launch our Spring stuff online because that is what people are looking forward to at that time.

6. Where is strangest place you have received orders from?

I wouldn’t say strange, but we have definitely been pleasantly surprised with the great reception from the international audience. When we started, we had no firm goals in place, other than let’s make some neckwear. We ship a lot to Europe, Russia, Brazil, Argentina, Korea, Singapore, and are always intrigued when we see orders coming in from smaller and more random countries where we never even knew we had a fan base. We love shipping to all of our international customers.

7.  Kanye West, Frank Sinatra or Elvis Presley?

No Kanye. Always Frank and sometimes Elvis.

Interview: Daniel from Blixt&Dunder

OC: Tell us about Blixt & Dunder; Who are the creative minds behind it, how long have you been around is this a full time venture or a side project?

BD: Blixt & Dunder really started after a trip to Barcelona that Lisa and I took in the fall of 2009. We are both designers (I'm a multidisciplinary designer with my main focus on digital design and film, and Lisa is a print designer and illustrator) and we wanted do something together. Fun projects, projects that doesn't necessarily pay well but lets us explore new areas as designers.

Blixt & Dunder is currently a side project but we would both love to make it work as full-time business.

OC: The bow tie. It obviously allows you to showcase your branding and packing capabilities, but what made you decide to produce such a traditional men’s fashion accessory as your “first physical production?”

BD: Well, I'm a bow tie wearer and I've had a hard time finding bow ties that have that little extra. A bow tie with a twist if you like. So we decided to look into making a bow tie. Luckily we found a great British manufacturer that was super friendly and helpful. The whole process from design, fabric samples and production took about four months.

OC: Is there a story behind the pattern?

BD: The pattern comes from our company name. Blixt & Dunder means lightning and thunder in Swedish.

OC: A number of men’s fashion blog’s have been talking about the bow tie. Is this the market you were intending to tap into?

BD: The response has been great and we're really happy with all the attention we've gotten so far. And yes, the fashion blogs and their readers are exactly the kind of market we were looking for.

OC: What, if any, other projects are you currently working on? When can we expect to see the next release from Blixt & Dunder?

BD: That's a secret. But I can tell you that we have a couple of ideas that we hope will materialize over the coming months *knock on wood*. The plan for our products is to release one, limited edition product each 6 month. So hopefully you can expect to see something new and beautiful in the spring of 2011.

But a product doesn't have to be fashion accessory…

OC: Can you tell us about your design process? Do you have a structured way of working or is it a more dynamic and fluid process?

BD: Since we're a married couple the ideas and process is very lose and fluid. There is no dedicated brainstorming sessions or meetings. Things come up when we ride our bikes or are out drinking coffee.

OC: Kanye West, Elvis Presley or Frank Sinatra?

BD: Kanye Sinatra.

The Windmill Club Autumn Winter 2010

As part of their Autumn/Winter 2010 collection, The Windmill Club has released six ties and two bow ties. Both bow ties are available for $64.

Follow them on Twitter

Blixt & Dunder Limited Edition Bow Tie

"It takes a person of strong character to put on a bow tie for the first time. With the bow tie around one's neck you will join the ranks of some of the world's most opinionated people and you risk being looked upon as a snob, someone who is trying to make a statement, someone who revels in the attention.

Blixt & Dunder is a husband and wife team, specializing in branding, packaging design and concept development. They are based in the wonderful town of Malmö, Sweden. The Blixt bow tie is the first physical product to be released by the duo."

Blixt & Dunder make beautiful things.

Aubin & Willis Autumn Winter 2010 (No-bowties)

No bow ties present in this collection, but it was well worth writing about nonetheless. The standout features are the clever use of colour, pattern and solid blocks of colour to create really interesting outfits. Pay a visit to the Aubin & Willis store by clicking here.

Freshjive Spring 2011 Collection

Woke up to this image today. It's part of the lookbook from the Freshjive Spring 2011 Collection. Freshjive are a brand that we have not really followed, however there are some glimpses of a real street elegance which we are seeing more and more. If James Bond and Pete Doherty collided on a runway, something like this collection may culminate.

We would highly recommend that you have a look at the Freshjive website. The home page takes the form of a blog and to our surprise, the latest post looks in detail at the life of Malcom X. If you look a little further, you will see that they also have a separate blog, The World's Got Problems, where they publish information about many serious world issues. Kudos to Freshjive for taking a step in the right direction by using their huge global influence to help make a difference.

Dos Equis x Kaws

There are few things that excited me more than seeing an 'x' between two name that I either do or don't know. In this case the 'x' falls between Kaws, a name that is very well known in the world of art&design and a name that until now, i had not heard of; beer company Dos Equis.
Collaboration is a great thing. Check out the video below release to promote the collaboration.
